Spilling the beans

In what can only be described as a whirlwind week for far north coffee, two legends of the magic bean are heading off to pastures new. Early this week saw a quiet and unassuming announcement from the proprietors of Ransom Coffee declaring they had “done a thing” and sold their prolific and popular roastery. Husband and wife team Kirby and Sarah Koopman first entered the Cairns coffee scene through their successful cafe on Spence Street, selling up in 2016 to focus entirely on their wholesale roasting venture. FNQ Food insiders can confirm the new owner is none other than successful cafepreneur James Duan, who along with his wife Tracey, own and operate slick city cafes Envy Espresso on Lake street and Grey Goose on Sheridan.

Then in another seismic event in the world of FNQ beans another announcement hit our desk that Gilberto Risa ‘the Godfather of Cairns coffee’ and wife Sharee have decided to hang up their aprons after thirteen years handing the reins over to new owners. Cruze broke the mould in local coffee providing a smorgasbord of coffee roasts, blends and origins each with their own distinct flavour and available on a by the cup basis. Gil has assured his large and loyal following that Cruze is in good hands and to expect a seamless transition.

We look forward to many more years of excellence to come from these iconic cairns brands, that have helped many of us through the difficult times on, well, Monday and any other day too! The FNQ Food team are one amongst many that wish these guys every success in whatever they decide to do next.
