Muddy's Cafe

This place could easily win the contest for busiest in Cairns, it’s ideal location, proximity to child friendly activities and view across the entirety of Trinity Bay all contribute to the bustling success. It has also another trinity up its sleeve, a simple one of good food, good coffee and good value. The menu in this open air establishment covers the three main mealtimes, breakfast, lunch and dinner and does so with equal competence. I found myself there, along with many others after a leisurely stroll on the esplanade one Sunday morning.  Judging by the attire of my co-eaters, many attendants had been working at far less leisurely pursuits than an easy stroll and seemed rejuvenated after various forms of public exertion. The service is counter order, or table app and the food and drinks are delivered to your numbered table flag or number by well presented and elegant wait staff who glide through the busy venue with the air of confidence drawn from familiarity with hub-bub. My choice for Sunday morning was perfect, adopting a fairly traditional take on eggs Benedict, with my companions choosing an amazing looking açai bowl and something bearing the handle of ‘silly salmon’, which was smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on sourdough. The Benedict was with bacon, cooked to bacon perfection, adequate crispness and great smoked flavour. None of the anaemic ‘still ham’ or burnt shoe leather which can disappointingly often can be served elsewhere. The Benedict sauce was stock standard, and I would wager not made on site, but everything came together in a genuinely good flavour style, and very notably for less than twenty bucks. The other breakfast dishes too came in at under twenty dollars, which although certainly not the point of the exercise, was a delightful plot twist.  Also very worthy of note, and clearly popular with the multitude of the fit and the healthy, were the made to order fresh juices, an array of choices and suggested combinations to cater from junior fruit fans through to those participating in a juice fast, whatever that is. The coffee was great, and certainly a reviver coming from the prodigious local roaster, Ransom. All in all Muddy’s is a perfectly located, family friendly and vibrant outdoor cafe with a great choice offering excellent value. Spandex or no spandex I can thoroughly recommend it.
