Wolf Lane Distillery is opening its doors again, bringing fresh life to Cairns’ most iconic laneway and creating a cellar-door experience that involves more than wandering in, buying a bottle and wandering out again.
Originally established in a red-brick warehouse off Abbott Street in 2019, Wolf Lane began with its Tropical Gin and has since grown into an increasingly broad range of locally made spirits built around the flavours, produce and rather useful abundance of Far North Queensland.
Production has now moved to a dedicated facility in Bungalow, leaving the original CBD premises free to become something different. The result is a refurbished cellar door, bar and evening destination that retains the bones of the original warehouse while giving the space a considerably more polished second life.
The exposed brick, lofty industrial ceiling and sense of laneway informality remain, but the room has been softened and sharpened in equal measure. Clean-lined furniture, upholstered seating, warm timber, contemporary lighting and shelves of Wolf Lane’s increasingly colourful bottles make it feel somewhere between a tasting room, neighbourhood bar and grown-up spirits playground.
There is, quite deliberately, a less grown-up element as well. Beyond the main cellar-door space sits an arcade-style area complete with pinball machines and enough unexpected detail to stop the whole exercise becoming overly reverential about gin. It is a clever addition: this is clearly somewhere designed for people to stay awhile rather than dutifully sniff botanicals, nod appreciatively and leave.
The wider laneway has undergone something of a personality transplant too.
Where Three Wolves once stood, Wild Pony Saloon has brought an entirely different energy to the precinct. The Hospo Group’s country-inspired venue leans into bourbon, beer, live entertainment and line dancing, providing a noisier, boots-on-the-floor counterpoint to Wolf Lane’s more measured spirits offering.
Together, the two venues give the laneway a renewed identity. Start with a tasting, move on to a cocktail and, should the evening develop ambitions of its own, continue next door.
For Wolf Lane, the reopening also provides a useful opportunity to show just how far the distillery has travelled since those early Tropical Gin days. Its established range now includes Tropical Gin, Navy Strength Gin, Davidson Plum Gin, coffee liqueurs and Grapefruit Aperitif, with four new liqueurs joining the line-up: Peach, Lychee, Pandan and Triple Sec.
The additions broaden the distillery’s appeal considerably, particularly for bartenders and enthusiastic home cocktail makers, while staying comfortably within Wolf Lane’s preference for distinctive flavours and drinks that are actually meant to be used rather than simply admired on a shelf.
The refurbished cellar door will put greater emphasis on tastings, retail and gin-blending experiences, giving visitors a closer connection to both the spirits and the story behind them.
More importantly, it no longer feels constrained by the traditional idea of what a cellar door ought to be. This is as much somewhere to meet for a drink as it is somewhere to discover a local distillery; somewhere to taste the range, learn a little, buy a bottle if the mood takes you and then settle in for the evening.
Wolf Lane has always made considerable use of its Cairns identity, putting tropical produce and Far North flavours into the bottle rather than merely printing them on the label.
Now, with a refreshed home, an expanded range and a rambunctious new neighbour, the little laneway where it all began appears ready for another round.
