April will herald the inaugural Tasting the Tropics, a month-long food celebration designed to showcase the depth and diversity of Tropical North Queensland’s culinary scene.
Presented by Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ), the new initiative brings together restaurants, cafés, farms, hotels and tour operators across the region in a coordinated program of food-focused events and experiences.
The campaign highlights the region’s unique agricultural base - with more than 150 varieties of fruit grown locally — alongside the chefs and producers who transform tropical ingredients into contemporary dining experiences.
TTNQ Chief Executive Officer Mark Olsen said the program aims to celebrate the people behind the region’s food culture and encourage both locals and visitors to explore what is available across Tropical North Queensland.
The celebration will begin a few days early with Feast of the Senses in Innisfail. Now in its 23rd year, the four-day festival features rare fruit tastings, cooking demonstrations, market stalls, food trails and the popular River Feast event, drawing visitors to the Cassowary Coast.
Throughout April, participating venues will offer special menus, masterclasses, tastings and curated dining experiences. In Cairns, Ochre Restaurant will feature native ingredients such as Ooray (Davidson’s) plum across food and beverage menus, reflecting the region’s growing focus on Indigenous and locally sourced produce.
