A Warm "Irasshaimase!" at Yama Zaru Izakaya

Walking into Yama Zaru Izakaya, you’re greeted by the lively shout of “Irasshaimase!” from the staff, a Japanese phrase that translates to “Welcome to the store!” It’s this warm and enthusiastic welcome that sets the tone for the experience awaiting you inside, where the charm of Japanese hospitality and the finest ingredients come together to create a memorable meal.

The first thing that strikes you about Yama Zaru is the atmosphere. With cherry blossoms and vibrant Japanese murals lining the walls, the space feels like a little slice of Japan nestled right in Cairns. Owner Adam Craven-Sands, a passionate Japanophile, has spent years perfecting the details, from sourcing authentic décor to curating a menu that stays true to the heart of traditional Japanese cuisine.

On my recent visit, I started with their famous gyoza. Crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and bursting with flavour, they set a high standard right from the start. The sushi that followed was equally impressive—fresh, simple, and beautifully presented, with the chef behind the bar working meticulously to craft each dish. There's something comforting about chatting with the chef as they prepare your food, giving the experience a personal touch that elevates the meal.

Of course, I couldn’t resist the marinated octopus, a dish that has quickly become a staple of mine at Yama Zaru. Its tender texture and perfectly balanced seasoning make it a standout. And let’s not forget the karaage chicken—golden, crispy, and utterly satisfying, served with a side of tangy mayo that brings the dish to life.

Yama Zaru is also home to an impressive selection of sake. This time, I paired my meal with a light, dry sake that complemented the richness of the food perfectly. The range of sakes on offer means there’s always something new to try, and the staff are more than happy to guide you through the choices. Adam himself recently gained qualification as a Sake Sommelier, making him an even more rare and insightful host!

Although the karaoke room is currently closed, the restaurant still offers plenty to keep you coming back. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a regular, the combination of fresh ingredients, skilled chefs, and a welcoming atmosphere make Yama Zaru Izakaya a must-visit spot for anyone in Cairns.
