Mt Uncle Distillery Wins Again at World Whiskies Awards 2020

Bringing home the award for best single malt aged under 12 years against Australian competition puts Walkamin's own Whisky into the next round this international competition.

Seven years hard work has paid off for boutique Tropical North Queensland distillers, Mt Uncle Distillery, after their single malt whisky was named the finest in the ’12 Years and Under’ category at the recent 2020 World Whiskies Awards in London over the weekend. The Watkins Whisky Co. single malt will now move forward for the prestigious title of World’s Best Whisky.

“It’s pretty much the Olympic Games of the whisky world,” distiller Mark Watkins says. “Performing well here is epic for us, a great testament to the team and we’re stoked to put Walkamin on the map.”

The World Whiskies Awards is a prestigious competition held in London annually, where the best expressions from around the world duke it out to be crowned champion in their respective categories. Everything from blended whiskies to limited edition single malts and get their chance to shine as expert panellists blind taste and score each expression across several rounds, with the final winner being announced at an awards dinner in March.

In recent years, Mt Uncle Distillery has collected more than a swag of awards – their flagship product, the Mt Uncle Botanic Australis Gin has more national and international medals than can be listed; the Mt Uncle FNQ Co Platinum Rum collected gold at the 2019 Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits and was ranked second overall out of all rums worldwide, and the FNQ Rum Co Iridium Gold was named World’s Best Pot Still Rum (5 Years & Under) at the World Rum Awards in 2019.

Located in the foothills of a banana plantation in Tropical North Tropical Queensland, Mt Uncle Distillery has built an impeccable and unrivalled reputation in producing award winning premium spirits and liqueurs still with a huge emphasis on using as many local and national Australian ingredients as possible.
